Humanity Against the Cards
Humanity Against the Cards explored Jessica and Cylene's trust in each other and their Type A struggle to make sense of even the most bizarre prompts and situations. The work presents itself as informal play as the dancers experiment within an outlined structure of improvisational scores and verbal interaction between each other and a set of "Cards Against Humanity" cards. Cylene had this fun idea to make an improvisational-based work that played with a deck of "Cards Against Humanity" cards. Jessica and Cylene discussed making the work for almost a year before jumping in the studio and developing it. With no show or festival in mind to actually premier the work, the pair took their time playing, challenging each other's making habits, and finding moments that felt right. Because of the improvisational nature of the work, each performance is completely different as the pair respond to different cards, different audiences, and each other's attempt to throw the other off of their habitual patterns. |
